TurboTax Settlement: Get Yours!

ICYMI (In Case You Missed it) Intuit who owns TurboTax agreed on May 4th to pay $141Million in restitution to 4.4Million “low income customers” who were erroneously charged using the TurboTax Free Edition. If you use Turbo Tax, read below for all the details in case you might qualify for some restitution!

Who is Impacted: TurboTax Free Edition users in All 50 States, tax filing years 2016 to 2018.

What Happened: Turbo tax marketed to their customers in a “free, free, free” campaign selling their TurboTax Free Edition and then charged them for filing in tax years 2016 to 2018. Customers who were eligible to file for free, due to income limits, should have received their tax filing services for free.

What was Decided: Intuit admits no wrong doing but will suspend their marketing “free, free, free” campaign as well as better attempt to communicate to users whether they are actually eligible to file for free using their products. Customers are expected to receive about $30 for each year they were erroneously charged between 2016-2018 tax years.

How to Know if You Were Affected: The IRS estimates about 1/3 of taxpayers are eligible for free filing. If you used TurboTax Free Edition for tax year’s 2016, 2017, or 2018 you may receive a settlement. For reference, the income limits in 2020 were $39,000 and $72,000 active-military.

How to Get Yours: Eligible consumers will automatically be notified and reimbursed via check by mail.
