Let’s cap off our Credit Report & Credit Score series with a unique Credit Score Building Hack ala The Budgetnista!
Tiffany Aliche, aka The Budgetnista, is by far one of my favorites to follow/read/get inspired by regarding personal finance because of her fun spirit, intelligence, and relatability. Also, she started out like me: helping friends and family get their money-acts together, and also volunteered in her community at the United Way—I do both of those things.
Her new book “Get Good with Money” is a NYT bestseller and chock-full of useful tips and easily digestible information in order to become what she calls “Financially Whole”. Highly recommend.
One of the most unique and memorable pieces of advice I took away from her book (full disclosure: I have not tried this method myself, but Tiffany has) was what she calls the “Jump like Jordan” credit hack. Essentially, it’s an easy way to get your credit score to “Jump, Jump, Jump” in a short amount of time, perhaps 12 months or so.
Here it is:
1. Take a credit card you already have that has either a zero balance, a very low balance you can pay to zero, or open a new one. The point is to start with a card with a zero balance.
2. Check your budget for what she calls a “baby bill”. The smallest reoccurring bill in your budget; think: a Netflix bill or a small membership subscription.
3. Automate that bill to go on that credit card, and then automate your bank to pay off that card to a zero balance monthly.
4. Refrain from using that credit card for anything else. Just let that cycle continue automatically.
Give it a shot, and let me know if your credit score goes up!
